Day 1 — The pattern that keeps you starting over.

This is the first lesson from The 1% Man: Dating after 60. Read it slowly. One page is enough to see whether the tone fits you.

You are not starting from zero.

You have history. You have habits. You have a way of showing up that made sense at some point — maybe when you were married, maybe when you were younger, maybe when you were trying to keep the peace.

That is not a flaw. It is a pattern. And patterns can be seen, named, and changed.

The cycle usually looks like this

1. You meet someone. There is a spark, or at least hope.

2. You start reaching first. A message, a call, a plan. You tell yourself it is just effort.

3. The effort becomes one-way. She replies, but rarely starts. You explain it away.

4. You wait for clarity. The warm version of her appears just often enough to keep you hoping.

5. You start over. Not because you failed — because the pattern ran again.

Why this happens after 60

Many men your age were taught to prove their value through effort: provide, fix, stay steady, don't complain. Those are good traits. But when they become the only way you connect, you end up auditioning for a place that should be mutual.

The goal is not to become colder. It is to become clearer.

Three honest questions

  1. Where in your last relationship did you do most of the reaching?
  2. What did you tell yourself to explain the imbalance?
  3. What would change if you stopped reaching first for two weeks?
